Palo Alto, Calif. - Long Beach State used singles from Darian Tautalafua and Lauren MacLeod to push Saturday’s contest with North Dakota State into extra innings, and then a double from LT Torres finished off the game as the Beach rallied to win 2-1 in extra innings.

North Dakota State (5-4), who came into the weekend just outside of the Top 25 and receiving votes, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff batter Katie Shoultz reached on a bunt single, and after another single by Logan Moreland, an RBI base hit by Alyssa Reina scored the opening run of the game.

With runners on second and third with one out, LBSU starting pitcher Christina Clermont was able to strike out Bre Beatty, and then a fly out ended the inning and the threat.

Clermont cruised from there, finishing the eight-inning complete game by striking out five, walking none and giving up just two more hits over the remaining seven innings.

It took Long Beach State (4-3) a while to break through however, as Jacquelyn Sertic held the Beach scoreless through six innings as the Bison held a 1-0 lead.

The senior Tautalafua stepped up in the bottom of the seventh, however, leading off the inning with a base hit. After a sacrifice moved Tautalafua over, a single into right field from MacLeod was enough to tie the game.

Clermont struck out the first two batters of the eighth inning before getting a flyout, working around the tiebreaker runner and setting the stage for the Beach in the bottom half.

A bunt single from Alley Perkins put runners on the corners for LT Torres, who left no doubt by doubling home Nichole Fry to give Long Beach State a 2-1 win.

Long Beach State will have a rematch with North Dakota State Sunday morning at 9 a.m. before finishing off the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. game against St. Mary’s.
