Softball Shuts Out CSU Bakersfield To Earn Split Sunday
Jessica Flores went 2-for-2 with a solo home run to key the win.
Long Beach, Calif. - Junior Jessica Flores went 2-for-2 with a walk, a single and a home run to help life the Beach to a 2-0 win over CSU Bakersfield in the second of two games on Sunday. Long Beach State fell in the first 8-0 in six innings to No. 16 Utah.
Long Beach State (4-3-1) was playing without Tierra Falo and Lauren Lombardi, and struggled to find offense without the two big batters on the day. Senior pitcher Christina Clermont was more than up to the challenge in the second game however, making the start against Cal State Bakersfield (1-6).
Clermont went the distance, allowing just two hits on the way while striking out four on the way to her first complete game shutout of the season. Her effort in the circle was supported by an early run.
The small ball was key, as that would stand as the only run of the game until the sixth inning, when Flores capped a great day at the plate by hitting her first home run of the season, providing a critical insurance run for the 49ers.
In the first game, No. 16 Utah was in command throughout, piling up 16 hits while holding Long Beach State to just two, as Katie Donovan struck out six with no walks. Devyn Magnett pitched well around trouble, surrendering just two runs through the first four innings, but the Utes brought three across in the fifth, and then added three more in the sixth off of reliever Skie Munoz to close out the run-rule victory.
Long Beach State's next games will be the first for the team away from home, as the Beach travels to participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs next weekend. First up for Long Beach State is a 10 a.m. game with Oklahoma State on February 23.
