49ers fall to Portland State in final game of Las Vegas tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Portland State broke open a tight game with eight unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 12-1 win over Long Beach State in five innings at the Louisville Slugger Desert Softball Tournament on Sunday.

Long Beach State (5-5) took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI double by Nalani St. Germain that scored Dana Garcia in the bottom of the second inning. Garcia walked and stole second to set up St. Germain's run-scoring hit.

The Vikings (4-6) blew the game open in the fourth with eight runs and then added four more in the fifth. Long Beach State nearly got out of the fourth inning unscathed, but a two-out error by third baseman Hannah De Gaetano led to the big inning. PSU took a 1-0 lead on the error, and then Carly McEachran made it 5-0 with a grand slam home run. After a walk, passed ball and RBI single extended the Vikings' lead to 6-1, Karman Holladay hit a two-run homer to make it 8-0.

Erin Jones-Wesley (5-1) was charged with her first loss of the season after allowing eight unearned runs on six hits in four innings. She struck out four and walked three. Freshman Amanda Hansen pitched the fifth inning and allowed four runs, all earned, on two hits and two walks.

LBSU finished with three hits against Anna Bertrand (4-2), who struck out four and walked two.

The 49ers return to action at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs with a pair of games Thursday, one on Saturday and two on Sunday.
