Freshman Shayna Kimbrough delivered a one-out RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the 49ers a 2-1 win over the Tigers in LBSU's first game of the day at the Las Vegas Tournament. Kimbrough drove in Megan Denio on a chopper to shortstop Morgan Mosby whose throw was late trying to get Denio at the plate.
Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Hannah De Gaetano put the 49ers in the lead with a two-out RBI double to left center to score Denio from second. Denio drew a one-out walk and then stole second to get in scoring position.
Memphis tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the third when Alyssa Palmieri scored on a two-out throwing error by Cya Neal.
Erin Jones-Wesley (5-0) kept the 49ers in the game allowing just three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. She struck out eight and picked up the win when the 49ers rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Denio led off the seventh with a walk, and advanced to second on a bunt single by Neal. De Gaetano moved Denio to third and Neal to second with a sacrifice bunt before Kimbrough delivered the winning RBI.
De Gaetano led the 49ers' offense going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Denio was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Game 2: Ohio State 10, Long Beach State 5
Ashlynn Booker went 3-for-4 with her first career home run and three RBI, but it wasn't enough to overcome a pair of four-run innings by the Buckeyes (5-4).
