Errors Halt Upset Bid As Long Beach State Loses 9-1 To No. 8 Washington

Feb. 14, 2017

Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - Three of No. 8 Washington’s first four runs on Tuesday were unearned, hampering Long Beach State’s opportunity for an upset at home in a 9-1 loss to the Huskies. Luaren Lombardi went 1-for-2 with a walk in the loss.

Washington (4-1) struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Ali Aguilar led off the game with a double, and a single from Taylor Van Zee brought home the first run of the game. The Huskies then tacked on one addition run on a sacrifice fly following an error to take a 2-0 lead.

After an infield single in the second, a routine liner from Aguilar clipped off the glove of LT Torres, putting two runners in scoring position, and a single from Julia DePonte scored both runs as Christina Clermont took a hard-luck loss, allowing just one earned run in the four the 49ers allowed in her two innings of work.

Devyn Magnett came on in relief for Long Beach State (3-2-1), and was solid, starting with three scoreless innings while Long Beach State got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Aniesa Maulupe led off the inning with a walk before giving way to pinch runner Rachel Loera, and Lauren Lombardi followed with a single to put two on for LBSU. Two groundouts moved Loera around the bases, making the score 4-1 in favor of Washington through four innings.

After adding one more run in the top of the sixth, Washington broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs, with the big hits coming on back-to-back doubles from pinch hitter Maggie Gallagher and Aguilar.
