The 49er softball team opened up the 2013 season with a split decision on Friday as they defeated Wright State 7-4, but lost to No. 17 Texas A&M 8-0 on day one of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, hosted by UCLA.

LBSU faced Wright State in the first game and trailed 1-0 after one inning. The 49er bats exploded in the third as Long Beach scored seven runs en route to a victory. Erin Jones-Wesley got the win after pitching 4.0 innings while giving up five hits and just one run. Amanda Hansen came in to relieve Jones-Wesley and pitched 3.0 innings while giving up three hits and three runs. Hannah De Gaetano led the team with two RBIs.

"Our offense did a good job getting runs on the board and making adjustments at the plate," said Head Coach Kim Sowder. "However, we need to do a better job of closing out the game both on offense and defense."

In the second game against Texas A&M, Jones-Wesley again got the start. Both teams were held scoreless through two innings, but A&M was able to bring in three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0. Hansen then was brought into the game to relieve Jones-Wesley, but only pitched 0.1 innings after giving up two runs. Cal transfer Arianna Erceg finished the game in the circle for the 49ers as she pitched 1.1 innings, while giving up two runs. Texas A&M run-ruled the 49ers, ending the game after five innings.

"In the second game, we faced a very strong Texas A&M team and unfortunately they took advantage of a few of our mistakes," added Sowder. "We did some good things and need to learn from our mistakes. We are looking forward to getting back on the field Sunday."

Long Beach is off on Saturday and returns to the field Sunday to face Cal State Bakersfield at 2:00 pm.
