Long Beach State had some early chances to break the game open, but CSUN worked around the potential trouble posed by the Beach and the Matadors came away with the win over LBSU at the 49er Softball Complex Sunday 3-1.
Freshman Hannah Cookson had four hits on the day, two in each game including a game-winning double to finish off CSUN in game two as Long Beach State split a pair of games with the Matadors on Saturday. A rain-soaked opener went CSUN's way 6-2, but the Beach bounced back with a 5-4 walkoff win in the evening.
It might be a little over dramatic to say the season comes down to this weekend, but a series between teams in first and second place in the Big West makes for a great matchup as the 49ers host CSUN for a trio on Saturday and Sunday. The series starts with a doubleheader 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the final game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Lauren Lombardi went 2-for-3 with five walks over the course of two games Wednesday, including hitting a grand slam in the opening game. The Beach took the opener 5-1 and then rallied to win a wild 7-6 contest with a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning.
