Gonzales, Rangel, Froment Earn Top Honors In 2016 All-Big West Awards

Nov. 2, 2016

Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State had six players recognized by the conference as the Big West Announced the Women’s Soccer All-Conference awards on Wednesday. Ashley Gonzales was the Offensive Player of the Year, Mimi Rangel was the Midfielder of the Year and Chloe Froment was picked as the Freshman of the Year as the Beach took home three top awards.

Mimi Rangel was named the Big West Midfielder of the year for the second time, having previously earned the honor in 2014. Rangel scored four goals and added four assists, finishing second on the team over the regular season in points and producing goals in clutch moments, scoring three game-winners, third-most in the Big West.

Junior Ashley Gonzales was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Year after another outstanding season as the primary target for the 49ers. Scoring in nine of Long beach State’s 18 games, Gonzales tied for the conference lead with nine goals on the year, while her 21 points were second-best in the league.

Joining those two players in top honors was Big West Freshman of the Year Chloe Froment. The France native has played in every minute of the 2016 campaign at center back for the Beach, anchoring the back line for what has been one of the league’s best defenses. Froment has also contributed in the attacking third as well, making four assists on the year which was tied for the most on the team.

Froment’s award marked the third time in the last four years that LBSU has claimed Freshman of the Year merits, as both Rangel and Gonzales previously garnered the honor.

All three players were also named first-team All-Big West. For Gonzales, it marked the second straight season in the first team while Rangel became the first Long Beach State player to be named first-team All-Big West four times, an achievement shared with only two other players in conference history.

Senior goalkeeper Ashton McKeown was named to the second team for the second season in a row. McKeown ranks second all-time in saves, shutouts, GAA and minutes played in goal at Long Beach State, and was second in the Big West Goals Against Average in conference play this past year.

Two 49er newcomers earned Honorable Mention honors as well. Freshman Defender Kaitlin Fregulia played in all 18 games partnering in the back with Froment, making 24 shots on goal and scoring twice with an assist, while sophomore transfer Dana Fujikuni was third on the team in points with two goals scored and three assists while playing in the midfield.

Both Fregulia and Froment also were selected to the All-Freshman Team.
