LONG BEACH - Long Beach State swept the Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week awards as freshman midfielder Mimi Rangel was named the offensive player of the week and sophomore goalkeeper Kaci McCain received defensive player of the week honors, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

The duo earned their first career weekly awards after lifting LBSU to a 1-0 win over No. 11 BYU on Saturday (Sept. 21).

Rangel scored the game's only goal in the 14th minute. On a free kick, she was lined up in the center and just outside the penalty box when she chipped a perfect shot that went over the Cougar wall and curled to the right, making its way past an outstretched BYU goalkeeper. It was Rangel's third goal of the season and second game-winner against a ranked opponent, adding to her 90th-minute strike at No. 23 Texas Tech. The Chino, Calif., native is now tops on the squad with nine points and is tied for the team lead with three goals and 14 shots.

Rangel had the early goal and McCain came up with the late heroics to preserve the 1-0 win for Long Beach State. McCain made three crucial saves, but none more dramatic than her stop in the 87th minute when she dove to her right to thwart a point-blank shot from the middle of the box. The Valencia, Calif., native picked up her second shutout while improving to 5-1-0 and trimming her goals against average to 0.83 on the season.

BYU represents the 11th ranked opponent the 49ers have beaten in five years. In addition, it marks the third time in program history that they have defeated more than one ranked foe in a season.

Long Beach State wraps up its non-conference schedule in the upcoming week as it hosts San Francisco on Thursday, Sept. 26, before heading to San Diego on Monday, Sept. 30.
