LBSU Women's Soccer Set to Host FIU in Exhibition Game This Friday

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team will host FIU in an exhibition game Friday, Aug. 16, at George Allen Field. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. (PT), which was changed from the original start time of 6 p.m.

The 49ers, who are coming off their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, return 13 letterwinners and five starters from last year's squad that finished with a 12-8-0 overall record.

Leading the way in 2013 will be senior midfielder Eileen Maes and junior midfielder Taylor Nelson. Maes, a second-team All-Big West selection, was tops on the squad with nine goals, and added three assists and 21 points last year. Nelson garnered All-Big West honorable mention recognition after registering three assists and 28 shot attempts.

LBSU also welcomes back sophomore forward Elizabeth Lyons (2 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore midfielder Hannah Sanders (1 goal, 1 assist), who were both named to the conference's all-freshman team in 2012.

The 49ers will officially open the season on Friday, Aug. 23, when they host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m.

FIU returns 19 letterwinners and 10 starters from its 2012 squad that went 13-6-2 overall and claimed a share of the Sun Belt regular season title. The Panthers are entering their first year in Conference USA where they were picked to finish first in the East Division and fifth overall by the league's 16 head coaches.



FIU welcomes back its top two scorers in senior forward Chelsea Leiva and junior midfielder Scarlet Montoya. Leiva compiled a team-best 11 goals and 29 points, while also totaling seven assists. Montoya chipped in nine goals, six assists and 24 points.

This marks the first meeting between Long Beach State and FIU.
