June 6, 2013
LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2013 season.
LBSU will play a 19-game slate that features 10 home games at George Allen Field. The 49ers will face five teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, including a rematch with last year's first round opponent Santa Clara and Elite Eight team BYU.
The 49ers start the 2013 campaign on Aug. 16, hosting Florida International in a friendly scrimmage at George Allen Field before officially opening the season at home versus Northern Arizona on Aug. 23. LBSU heads to Santa Clara on Aug. 29 for its first road trip of the year as the 49ers will try to avenge last year's NCAA first round loss to the Broncos.
For the second consecutive year, LBSU returns to the Lone Star state to take on Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sept. 1. The 49ers will then host Big East Conference member Cincinnati on Sept. 6 for its first-ever meeting with the Bearcats. They follow that contest with a game against Loyola Marymount two days later.
In mid-September, LBSU heads to the south for first-ever meetings at Georgia in Athens on Sept. 13 and at Auburn on Sept. 15.
After its third road trip of the year, the 49ers come home to the friendly confines of George Allen Field to host BYU (Sept. 21) and San Francisco (Sept. 26). The Courgars are coming off an Elite Eight appearance where they lost in overtime in Provo, Utah to eventual national champion North Carolina.
LBSU will finish out its non-conference schedule with a game at the University of San Diego on Sept. 29.
The 49ers are scheduled to begin their Big West schedule the first weekend of October with a trip to Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. LBSU will host games against UC Davis, Hawai'i, Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside to round out its conference schedule.
This year's Big West Tournament will take place Nov. 7 and 10 at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
LBSU will be looking to make their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fifth overall in six years under 10th year head coach Mauricio Ingrassia. The 49ers return five starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team that features senior midfielder Eileen Maes and junior Taylor Nelson and forward Elizabeth Lyons.
"Our schedule will challenge us early," said Ingrassia. "There are several NCAA tournament teams, as well as tough environments that our team will face during non-conference play. We are looking to grow through our schedule and we're excited to get after it come August 7."
