LONG BEACH - Long Beach State women's soccer head coach Mauricio Ingrassia has announced the 49ers' schedule for the 2014 season, and it features one of the toughest non-conference slates in program history.
LBSU will play a 19-game schedule which includes seven teams that made it to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The 49ers' home schedule is highlighted by contests against NCAA Sweet 16 participants Wake Forest and Santa Clara.
"We're extremely excited to be playing one of the toughest preseason schedules in the country," Ingrassia said. "We'll be playing seven teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament, including Santa Clara and Wake Forest at George Allen Field, as those two teams advanced to the Sweet 16. This year's schedule will again challenge us early, prepare our players for the conference season and enable us to contend for the Big West championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament."
The Beach is set to open the season at the University of San Diego Tournament, where it will face USC on Aug. 22 and NCAA second-round participant Georgetown on Aug. 24. This will be the first meeting between the 49ers and Hoyas.
Long Beach State then returns to George Allen Field for a four-game homestand beginning with SEC member Georgia in the home opener on Aug. 29. LBSU will be looking to avenge last year's 1-0 loss to the Bulldogs in Athens as Georgia visits The Beach for the first time.
Summit League champion Denver closes out the 49ers' home-opening weekend on Aug. 31, while San Diego (Sept. 5) and Cal State Bakersfield (Sept. 7) also pay a visit to George Allen Field. Long Beach State then hits the road for a non-conference tilt at BYU (Sept. 13), which made it to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, before returning home to face Wake Forest on Sept. 15.
The 49ers travel to the Sunshine State for their final road trip of the preseason with visits to Orlando to face UCF (Sept. 19) and Miami to take on FIU (Sept. 21).
LBSU closes out non-conference play at home against Santa Clara (Sept. 28) as the Broncos make their way to The Beach for the first time since 1985.
Long Beach State will open Big West Conference play at home against Cal Poly on Oct. 3 and UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 5. The 49ers will also host UC Irvine (Oct. 12) and Cal State Northridge (Oct. 23) at George Allen Field.
This year's Big West Tournament is scheduled to take place on Nov. 6 and 9 at Cal Poly's Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
LBSU will be looking to win its fourth Big West title and make its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The 49ers return seven starters from last year's squad including reigning Big West Freshman of the Year Mimi Rangel, senior Taylor Nelson (First-Team All-Big West), junior Elizabeth Lyons (Second-Team All-Big West) and sophomore Mimi Akaogi (All-Freshman Team).
