Oct. 28, 2012
LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to Cal State Northridge in their final regular season game Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field.
LBSU (12-7-0, 5-4-0 Big West) hung tough through the first 13 minutes of extra play when the Matadors (9-4-6, 6-1-2 Big West) earned a corner kick in the 102nd minute. Nicole Cruz put a shot on goal when redshirt freshman goalkeeper Marrina Meyers punched it out. Taylor Hobson gained control of the ball off the deflection from Meyers and put the game-winner in to an empty net at the 103:06 mark. Meyers finished the game with four saves.
The first half saw physical play from both sides as each team was called for eight fouls and two yellow cards were issued to the Matadors. Meyers got involved in the game early as CSUN's Melissa Fernandez headed a shot on goal 49 seconds into the game. The 49ers were able to get off five shots in the half, all of which were blocked by a Northridge defender. Senior Alex Balcer led LBSU with three shots while sophomore Eileen Maes and freshman Elizabeth Lyons each contributed two.
The 49ers came out aggressive in the second half, earning back-to-back corner kicks in the first 90 seconds of the period. Long Beach State held the advantage in corner kicks, earning five to Northridge's three. LBSU's best scoring chance came at the 87:00 mark when senior Nadia Link used shifty footwork to get past a Matador defender and then goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo. Link's shot was sent just high over the crossbar to keep the game in a 0-0 tie.
The loss puts the 49ers in fifth place in the Big West, keeping them out of the conference tournament. LBSU will learn its fate for the NCAA Tournament on Monday, Nov. 5 when the selection show takes place at 1:30 p.m.
Long Beach State celebrated the accomplishments of its seven seniors before Sunday's match. The seniors include Camille Berg, Alex Balcer, Jenny Soza, Nadia Link, Kelsey Wilson, Jordan Nelson and Shannon Bullock.
