Ashley Gonzales With A Goal And An Assist Leads Long Beach State Over UC Davis 2-1
Kailee Prescott scored her first goal of her career in the victory.
Long Beach, Calif. - Facing a tough road challenge, Long Beach State got a lift from junior Ashley Gonzales, who assisted on the team’s first goal from Kailee Prescott and scored the game-winner after UC Davis had tied the game in a 2-1 win on the road.
The win moves Long Beach State into second place in the Big West standings, with two games remaining in the season for the 49ers.
Long Beach State (7-6-2, 3-1-1 Big West) appeared to strike early, as a Chloe Froment corner kick found its way to Gonzales who put the ball away into the net, but the junior forward was in an offside position and the tally was waved off. A 23rd minute shot from Rangel was saved by the Aggies’ Alexis Smith, taking away the 49ers’ best opportunity in the first half that saw neither team able to create much offense.
That would change in the second half. Long Beach State outshot UC Davis (6-8-3, 2-3-1 Big West) 8-5 in the second half, and put together a string of chances starting after the first 10 minutes. A dangerous ball from Gonzales was played back into the path of Jessica Vincent in the 59th minute, but her header was saved by Smith, and Long Beach State picked up a corner kick three minutes later.
The breakthrough the Beach had been looking for finally came in the 66th minute, as Ashley Gonzales chased down a ball at the end line, and sent a beautiful cross to the far post for freshman Kailee Prescott, whose first career goal gave Long Beach State a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as a UC Davis goal kick to Hinsseenee Regassa was played into space, and Nicole Bouvia was able to just get a foot past a charging Ashton McKeown to poke the ball just under the bar to tie the game with 15 minutes to play.
End to end action would continue. Following an easy save for Ashton McKeown on a Rachel Ahr shot, the senior used quick distribution to set up a counter for Long Beach State. Dana Fujikuni found a streaking Gonzales who had gotten behind the Aggie defense and placed a perfect shot past Smith to regain the lead for the Beach just minutes later.
The goal was the 11th game-winner of Gonzales’ career, tying her for third all-time at Long Beach State with Hayley Bolt.
Long Beach State held on to its one-goal advantage and took a 2-1 victory, picking up three important points. The Beach now sits in second place in the Big West standings with two games to play. LBSU travels to UC Riverside on October 27 and then hosts UC Santa Barbara on October 30 in the final two games of the regular season.
The Beach will also serve as hosts for the Big West Tournament this season, as the top four teams following conference play will advance to the tournament, starting on November 3 at George Allen Field.
