49ers set home attendance record in 1-0 loss to UC Irvine
Oct. 20, 2012
LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team held UC Irvine scoreless for 109 minutes, before the Anteaters converted on a penalty kick in double-overtime to come away with a 1-0 win Saturday night at George Allen Field.
The 49ers were called for a handball inside the box leading to Rachel Wood taking the penalty kick at the 109:05 mark for the Anteaters. Wood put the ball in to the right side of the net past redshirt freshman 49er goalie Marrina Meyers.
Neither team could find much offense in the first half. UCI took four shots while the 49ers took two. LBSU's best scoring chance came at the 8:01 mark when Lyons broke away from her defender to send a shot in from the right side of the box, but Anteater goalkeeper Corey Tobin was there to make the only save of the half.
The second half saw aggressive action by both squads with the 49ers taking seven shots to UCI's five. Senior Jenny Soza made the lone save for LBSU after Dana Sanderlin attempted to capitalize on an open net off a rebound. The 49ers drew back-to-back corner kicks within the last 90 seconds of regulation play. Nelson was able to put a shot on goal with 13 seconds left when Tobin made one of her four saves.
The Black and Blue rivalry game drew 1,304 fans, setting a new single-game record for George Allen Field.
The 49ers will close out their regular season at home next weekend when they take on Hawaii at 7 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 26) and Cal State Northridge on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 2 p.m.
