Oct. 17, 2013
IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's soccer team topped UC Irvine, 2-1, in a key Big West victory Thursday night at Anteater Stadium.
The 49ers (8-5-1, 2-1-1 BWC) were led by freshman midfielder Mimi Rangel, who converted on both of her attempts to account for the team's two goals. It was her second multiple-goal game of the year as she increased her team-best season total to five.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaci McCain anchored LBSU's defensive effort with a season-high seven saves. One crucial stop came in the 89th minute when a hard shot was taken from outside the 18-yard box.
Long Beach State struck first in the 22nd minute with a beautiful goal from Rangel. She placed a perfect shot over UC Irvine goalkeeper Corey Tobin and into the upper left corner from 20 yards out. Elizabeth Lyons was credited with the assist as she dribbled into the offensive third before finding Rangel on the right wing.
The 49ers' momentum from the first half carried over after the break as Rangel tacked on her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute to put the team up, 2-0. Sophomore Hannah Sanders picked up an assist on the play, pushing a through ball forward to Rangel who scored on a breakaway.
Soon afterward, the Anteaters started to increase their pressure, putting a shot past McCain in the 57th minute, but the goal was quickly taken back on an offsides call. UC Irvine's only goal of the game came in the 62nd minute when Jordan Bruce scored off a free kick from just outside the penalty box.
Long Beach State moved into fourth place in the Big West standings and is just two points behind league-leading UC Irvine, Cal Poly and UC Riverside.
LBSU continues Big West play against Hawaii (7-7-0, 2-3-0 BWC) this Sunday, Oct. 20. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at George Allen Field.
