IRVINE, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Long Beach State women's soccer team put up a fight but came up empty-handed in a tough 2-0 loss to UC Irvine Sunday evening at Anteater Stadium.

The 49ers dropped to 10-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Big West action, while UCI improved to 11-3-2 overall, 4-1-1 BWC.

LBSU totaled eight shots on the night as junior Nadia Link and senior Nicole Hubbard led the way with two attempts each. Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gustaves also had three saves in the loss.

The Anteaters struck in the 37th minute when Natalia Ledezma sent a lead pass up the middle of the field to Lexi Kopf. On one touch, Kopf tapped the ball past an oncoming Gustaves and found herself with an open net to give the home team the 1-0 lead.

Kopf almost tacked on another goal nearly one minute later when she was back in a one-on-one situation with Gustaves, but this time her shot went wide right. Gustaves also made a great save on a breakaway shot by Ledezma in the 44th minute to keep LBSU within one at intermission.

The 49ers finished with two shots in the first half as Link's attempt went just high and Jenny Soza's attempt went wide left. Long Beach State owned a 2-to-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the second period, LBSU came close to tying it up at the 57:48 mark when a loose ball made its way to the front of an open net, but Hubbard was covered by several UCI defenders and the Anteaters were able to clear the ball out.

UCI then put the game out of reach in the 71st minute when Ledezma placed the ball inside the far post from the right wing.

The 49ers had another chance to get on the board in the 76th minute when Hubbard sent a solid header toward the goal on a corner kick from Kelsey Wilson, but UCI keeper Jennifer Randazzo was there for the save. LBSU continued to put the pressure on with three shots over the final five minutes, but it wasn't enough as UC Irvine pulled out the 2-0 victory.

The Anteaters out shot the 49ers, 18-to-8, but LBSU held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Long Beach State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 21, when it begins the final stretch of the regular season by hosting UC Riverside in a 3 p.m. Big West showdown at George Allen Field.
