Long Beach State Falls 3-0 At UC Santa Barbara
After a scoreless first half, the Gauchos put home three goals following an early penalty to earn the win.
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Long Beach State held the Gauchos without a shot on goal in the first half, but an early penalty given against the Beach swung the momentum to UC Santa Barbara, as LBSU fell on the road 3-0 on Sunday.
Long Beach State (7-6-2, 1-3-1 Big West) had the better of the first half, outshooting the Gauchos 6-3 and forcing UC Santa Barbara (5-7-4, 1-3-1 Big West) keeper Maddie Julian into a pair of saves.
The first came in the 17th minute, as Long Beach State worked the ball all the way to the endline before finding Rola Badwiya for a shot. The in the 30th minute, Chloe Froment put in a set piece to Alyssa Alvarez, but Julian was again able to make the save.
The game turned in the opening minutes of the second half however, as Froment was deemed to have her arm in an unnatural position while blocking a shot in the box. Amanda Ball took the penalty shot for UCSB after the handball, and converted the shot to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead.
Ball added a second goal in the 70th minute. Following a foul on LBSU, Colby Parker lofted a cross on a set piece to the forward who headed home the second goal of the game. The Gauchos then tacked on an insurance goal in the 76th minute to take the 3-0 lead which would hold.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, October 22 when the Beach hosts UC Riverside at 6 p.m.
