LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team rallied in the second half, scoring twice over a two-minute span, to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, in Big West action Friday evening at George Allen Field.
The 49ers, who have now won 13-straight home games, improved to 9-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play.
LBSU owned a 19-to-7 advantage in shots and was paced by senior Nadia Link, who matched her career high with eight attempts.
UCSB (3-8-2, 0-2-1 BWC) went up 1-0 in the 23rd minute when Sara Feder's shot from 25 yards out sailed just inside the far post. That lead held up through the rest of the half as Long Beach State was unable to capitalize on its six attempts.
The 49ers regrouped at the break and came out attacking in the second period, outshooting the Gauchos, 13-2. Maes connected for the equalizer at the 60:08 mark. She took a pass from Mendiola and then made a quick cut move near the top of the box before sending a bullet to the lower right corner. It was Maes' fifth goal of the season.
Just under two minutes later, Mendiola was on the latter end of the play as she headed in the game-winner (61:55). Wilson delivered a free kick into the middle of the box where Mendiola, who was in a crowd of players, was able to get a touch on the ball.
Angelisa Cortez was the only UCSB player to finish with multiple shots as she had two attempts. She also assisted on Feder's goal.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, Oct. 7, when it plays host to Cal Poly in a 3 p.m. Big West showdown.
