Long Beach State Comes up Short in Big West Opener at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's soccer team dropped its Big West Conference opener to Cal Poly, 2-0, Friday evening at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
LBSU (6-5-0, 0-1-0 BWC) finished with eight shots, and in her first action of the season, freshman Paige Conway totaled a team-high four attempts. The 49ers also had four shots on goal and four corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Kaci McCain had two saves in the loss.
Long Beach State and Cal Poly battled to a scoreless tie in an evenly played first half. LBSU held a slight 4-to-3 edge in shots, with its best look coming in the 23rd minute when Melanie Fox's attempt off a corner kick was saved by the Mustangs' goalie.
Cal Poly (5-6-0, 1-0-0 BWC) then broke through in the second period with two quick goals. At the 55:03 mark, Elise Krieghoff won a 50-50 ball against McCain near the top of the box and followed it up with a shot to an open net. Just under two minutes later, Krieghoff struck again, putting the home team up, 2-0.
Krieghoff, who entered the game tied for seventh in the nation in goals scored, increased her season total to 13. She also had six of Cal Poly's 11 shots.
Long Beach State is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, when it heads to UC Santa Barbara for a 1 p.m. Big West showdown.
