LONG BEACH, Calif. - After a two-week break from competition, Long Beach State (7-3-1, 1-0 Big West) made an impressive return to the pitch on Sunday night at George Allen Field. The Beach got a pair of goals from senior Tori Bolden to earn a 2-0 victory against visiting Hawai’i (5-6, 0-2 Big West) in LBSU’s Big West opener.

It’s the first multi-goal game of Bolden’s career as she matched her personal best with four shots on the night. She now has three goals on the season and seven for her Long Beach State career. Katie Pingel and Rocio Rodriguez also took four shots, as Long Beach State outshot the Rainbow Wahine 17-9 in the match.

In goal, Mia Hummel recorded her second straight shutout while making just two saves. Her goal was not threatened after halftime as UH did not register a second-half shot attempt.

The visiting Rainbow Wahine had success early on in the match, taking six of the first eight shots. The best chance for UH came in the 17th minute when the Rainbow Wahine were awarded a penalty kick. Raisa Strom-Okimoto stepped to the spot but sent her shot high over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.

LBSU then opened the scoring in the 33rd minute on a nice move started by Rola Badawiya, who played the ball forward to Katie Pingel along the right side. Pingel created room for a cross, finding Bolden in a dangerous position to poke the ball home for a 1-0 lead.

It was all Long Beach State after halftime as the Beach outshot the Rainbow Wahine 11-0 and had five corner kicks in the second half. One of those corners led to the second goal, as senior Allie Emmons delivered the service into the box. Sophomore Kaitlin Fregulia elevated to send a strong header at goal, and likely would have scored if Bolden had not added the finishing touch a few yards in front of goal. Bolden put a back heel to the ball to guide it into the net for a 2-0 Long Beach lead in the 65th minute of play.

Rodriguez was a real spark plug in the second half, generating a handful of chances as the match wore on. The best look for Rodriguez came in the 82nd minute as she sent a blistering shot off the post, just inches away from scoring in her second straight match and adding to LBSU’s lead.

The Beach will return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a road contest at UC Irvine as part of the Black & Blue Rivalry with the Anteaters.
