Dominguez Nets Game-Winner in 86th Minute to Give 49ers 1-0 Victory Over USF
Sept. 26, 2013
LONG BEACH - The 49er women's soccer team extended their winning streak to three games as they beat San Francisco, 1-0, in a hard-fought match Thursday night at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State improved its overall record to 6-3-0, while the Dons dropped to 5-3-2 on the season.
LBSU outshot USF, 14-to-6, and finished with a season-best eight corner kicks. Freshman Celeste Dominguez scored the lone goal in the 86th minute, while sophomore Alyssa Montejo totaled a game-high four shots.
Sophomore Kaci McCain had two saves in her second consecutive shutout. She now has three on the year.
The first half started out with early pressure coming from both teams. Long Beach State and San Francisco each had a shot attempt and a corner kick opportunity within the first six minutes.
As play went on, the 49ers started picking up the pace with numerous scoring chances. The best one came in the 32nd minute when freshman Ashley Webb took a shot from outside the 18-yard box, forcing USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel to make a diving save. LBSU led the half in shots, 9-3.
The second period also proved to be a grudge match early on as it started with back-and-forth play once again. Long Beach State then began controlling the tempo of the game with precise ball control and numerous shot opportunities. With just over five minutes left in regulation, Mimi Akaogi served a cross into the box where Hannah Sanders tapped it to Dominguez on her right. Dominguez then found herself wide open from about 12 yards out and she quickly placed a shot in the upper left corner for the go-ahead goal.
The 49ers picked up their third-straight victory and also extended their home win streak to four games.
Long Beach State will be looking to continue its winning ways on Monday, Sept. 30, when it heads to the University of San Diego for its final non-conference game. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
