Fregulia Nabs Game-Winner In Double Overtime Thriller at UConn

Sept. 14, 2017

Box Score

Storrs, Conn. - Long Beach State controlled the action early and came through late, as Kaitlin Fregulia scored the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Beach dropped UConn 3-2 on the road in Connecticut.

Long Beach State (5-3-1) had the majority of possession through the first 30 minutes, and made that control count with the first goal of the game. A cross from Dana Fujikuni was misplayed by the Huskies, and freshman Kayla Cannon made UConn (2-4-2) pay, calmly putting away her first career goal to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead the 14th minute.

Yamillee Eveillard evened up the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute however, as a long ball from Kess Elmore slipped just past the Long Beach State back line to the foot of Eveillard to tie the game.

The Beach, who outshot UConn seven to five in the first half, would go into the break on top with another goal from a freshman. After drawing a foul just past midfield, Chloe Froment lifted a deep ball into the box, finding Rola Badawiya who put home a left-footed finish to score her second goal of the year and give Long Beach State a 2-1 lead. Long Beach State looked very dangerous in the opening minutes of the second half as well, as Dana Fujikuni just missed on the right side with a driven shot, and an on-target flick on by Fregulia was saved by Husky keeper Mollie Kerrigan.

Despite the early action in the offensive third, it was UConn that struck the only second half goal, as Vivan Beil deflected a Long Beach State clearance and then beat Sarah Pilster to earn a one-on-one opportunity against LBSU goalkeeper Mia Hummel which she converted in the 51st minute.

Long Beach State had a great opportunity to snag the win in regulation however. Mounting pressure in the closing minutes, a great buildup saw Katie Pingel move across the top of the box. Pingel slid a ball out wide to Allie Emmons who crossed back centrally to a diving Tori Bolden for the apparent game-winner. Bolden was called offside, however, and the goal was waved off.

The first overtime passed without much incident, but Long Beach State once again threatened late in the second overtime. A long throw-in to Fregulia in the box led to an LBSU corner kick, and then Emmons connected with Fregulia again, as the sophomore’s header beat Kerrigan to end the game in Long Beach State’s favor.

Fregulia’s goal was her second of 2017, as well as her second game-winning goal of the season after she scored the winner against No. 22 Northwestern earlier this season.

Long Beach State continues its East Coast road trip with one more game on Sunday, facing St. John’s at 9 a.m. PT. Fans can follow along live on ESPN3.
