Sept. 14, 2012
FULLERTON, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Long Beach State women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 double-overtime loss to Big 12 Conference member Texas Tech in the first game of the Under Armour Invitational at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium on Friday evening.
The Red Raiders (6-2-0) scored the golden goal with 31 seconds remaining in the game. It was the 49ers' first overtime loss of the season as they had come up with the late heroics in their previous three games that went into extra periods.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marrina Meyers compiled a career-high eight saves in the loss.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. The 49ers started off strong as Mendiola's shot was saved by Texas Tech goalkeeper Victoria Esson at the 1:53 mark. Nearly three minutes later, Maes' first attempt of the game went high.
Meyers finished with three saves while facing six shots in the opening period.
LBSU came out firing again in the second half with two attempts in the first three minutes, but it was the Red Raiders who would strike first as Hayley Haagsma headed in a corner kick at the 49:19 mark.
Just over seven minutes later, Maes tied it up when she took a pass from Link at the top of the box and buried the ball inside the right post.
Maes then put the 49ers up, 2-1, with 19:07 remaining, scoring her second goal of the game from 25 yards out on another assist from Link.
TTU made a late push, however, sending the game into overtime as Janine Beckie found the back of the net in the 85th minute. Beckie would then put away the game-winner at the 109:29 mark. The Red Raiders finished with 26 shots.
Long Beach State closes out the Under Armour Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 16, when it takes on Army at 11 a.m. at Titan Stadium.
