49ers drop 1-0 decision at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday afternoon as it fell at Saint Mary's, 1-0.

The Beach dropped to 4-2-1 on the season, while the Gaels remained undefeated at 6-0-0.

"The goal definitely changed the momentum," said LBSU head coach Mauricio Ingrassia. "We had some opportunities during the game. We fought hard and I'm proud of the effort we gave today."

The 49ers and SMC both finished with 14 shots attempts. Sophomore Alex Balcer and junior Shawna Gordon tied for the team lead with three shots apiece. Junior goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough compiled five saves in the loss.

Daelyn Paul scored the game-winning goal for Saint Mary's in the 20th minute when her shot from 35 yards out slipped through Kingsborough's hands.

LBSU won the battle in corner kicks, 6-2, with five coming in the second half.

Long Beach State returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 12, when it heads to Berkeley for an 11 a.m. non-conference showdown at 19th-ranked California.
