No. 25 Long Beach State Drops 1-0 Contest to No. 25/17 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 25 Long Beach State women’s soccer team went head-to-head with No. 25/17 Cal on Sunday at Edwards Stadium and the Beach came up just short as they dropped a 1-0 contest to the Bears.

Long Beach State’s (3-2-1) defense was stout in the contest as they held Cal (4-1-0) scoreless until the 73rd minute of action.

The first half saw both team’s offenses tally a total of eight shots, with the Bears netting five and the Beach recording three. LBSU led on corner kicks with five in the first half, while Cal collected two.

LBSU penetrated in the box in the first 45 minutes of action and managed to get a hold of three shots on target, however Cal’s goalkeeper, Emily Boyd, grabbed a trio of saves to keep the Beach off the board. Long Beach State was relentless in their offensive efforts making Cal’s defense work hard to keep the Beach scoreless.

The second half began with both teams still looking for their first goal of the game. The contest stayed scoreless for most of the second frame.

Cal tallied three shots in the final 45 minutes of action, while LBSU registered three. The Bears also held the edge on corner kicks in the second half, leading the Beach 4-1.

Long Beach State goalie Imani McDonald was solid in goal as she picked up four saves in the second half to tally five saves on the game. However, at 73:10, Cal’s Miranda Nild managed to break through the Beach defense and net the eventual game-winning goal.

The Beach finished the game with six shots as Rola Badawiya came off the bench and led the team with two shots and one on goal. Jessica Vincent, Katie Pingel, Tori Bolden and Kayla Cannon were responsible for the team’s remaining shots.

Long Beach State came away with four shots on goal in the match, six corner kicks, and five saves. Cal finished the match with 11 shots, six on target, six corners, and four saves.

Long Beach State’s next action will take place at George Allen Field when the Beach welcomes San Diego on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
