SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 23 Santa Clara scored two quick goals to propel it to a 4-0 win over Long Beach State Thursday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium.
LBSU (0-2-0) totaled 10 shots and was led by four players - Marie MacKenzie, Mimi Akaogi, Elizabeth Lyons and Mimi Rangel - who had two attempts each. Both of MacKenzie's shots were on goal. Freshman keeper Ashton McKeown played the entire 90 minutes and finished with four saves.
The Broncos (1-2-0) earned their first win of the season after falling to top-ranked North Carolina and No. 7 Virginia last weekend. Santa Clara is one of the elite programs in the nation with 23 NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 Finals Fours.
Morgan Marlborough put the home team on the board just 43 seconds into the game as her one-touch shot on a short pass from Julie Vass found the back of the net. Eleven seconds later, Rangel came back with a shot that was saved, and SCU countered with Julie Johnston scoring at the 1:31 mark. Johnston would then tack on her second goal of the night and put the Broncos up, 3-0, in the 13th minute.
The 49ers had a handful of scoring opportunities in the first half as six of their eight shots were on target. The Broncos totaled nine attempts, including four shots on goal.
Long Beach State regrouped at the break and locked down on defense before Santa Clara scored its final goal with just over four minutes left in the game.
SCU had 19 shots and was led by Marlborough's game-high four attempts.
LBSU is back on the road this weekend with another contest against a ranked opponent as it heads to No. 23 Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 1. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m. (PDT).
