COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Long Beach State women's soccer team completed a perfect weekend at the Aggieland Invitational Tournament as it topped No. 16 Virginia Tech, 2-1, Sunday morning at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The 49ers, who defeated No. 21 Washington State on Friday, improved to 3-1-0, while the Hokies dropped to 2-2-0. "These two wins are huge for the confidence of our team and obviously for our program," 49er head coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. "I am happy and proud for our kids but I also realize there is a lot of season left. We will celebrate today but we'll be back to work tomorrow to get ready for our home games this weekend. We're excited to play in front of our fans." Sophomore Nadia Link continued her strong play up front, scoring both of LBSU's goals. Link has now tallied four goals over the last three games. Senior Karina Camacho and junior Shawna Gordon both finished with an assist, while junior Emily Kingsborough anchored the defense with four saves. The Beach got on the board in the 34th minute after Virginia Tech goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts got called for a hand ball outside of the box. Camacho took the quick free kick before the Hokie defense had a chance to set up and found Link in the middle of the box, who put the ball away. The 49ers held on to their lead heading into the second half, forcing VT to push numbers forward. Sophomore Jenny Soza was then able to get behind the defense, sending a cross to Gordon, who passed it to Link inside the six-yard box where she connected for her second goal of the day at the 59:31 mark. LBSU continued to put pressure on the Hokie defense, but with 19 minutes left, Virginia Tech cut the deficit in half as Jennifer Harvey scored on a corner kick. The Beach kept its composure, however, and finished strong, firing off three shots in the final minute.
Long Beach State is back in action on Friday, Sept. 3, when it plays host to Utah State at 4:30 p.m. at George Allen Field. The 49ers are also set to entertain Sacramento State on Sunday (Sept. 5). |
