COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Jazz Strozier found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to give the Long Beach State women's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory over 21st-ranked Washington State on the first day of the Aggieland Invitational Tournament.

LBSU (2-1-0) picked up its biggest road win since a 4-1 victory at No. 21 Missouri on Sept. 6, 2009. It was also the 49ers' first triumph over a Pac-10 team since 2008.

"It was a great game for us," 49er head coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. "We really took the game over about midway through the first half and then when (Washington State) tied it up in the second it was a gut check for us because we needed to bounce back and we did. This is a positive step for us to continue to build our mentality."

Strozier, a transfer from Ventura College, netted the game-winner late in the second half, while sophomore Nadia Link had given The Beach the early lead with her second goal in as many games. Juniors Marysol Rosas, Shawna Gordon and Nicole Hubbard all finished with an assist, while classmate Emily Kingsborough racked up five saves in the win.

Washington State (1-2-0) fired off five shots in the first 20 minutes, but the 49ers took advantage of their first attempt of the game when Link got The Beach on the board at the 21:30 mark. Gordon moved the ball up to Rosas, who found Link in the center of the six-yard box where she was able to put the ball away. LBSU's defense held up strong for the remainder of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Cougars tied it up in the 68th minute when Brandi Vega found the back of the net, but LBSU finished strong as Strozier scored the game-winner with 6:16 left on the clock. Strozier connected from the left side of the box on a pass from Hubbard.

Washington State held a narrow 11-to-9 advantage in shots. Senior Lindsay Bullock finished with a game-high four attempts, while Link had three.

The 49ers return to Aggie Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 29, when they take on No. 16 Virginia Tech at 8:30 a.m. (PT).
