Eileen Maes' header in overtime lifts No. 15 LBSU past No. 24 Baylor, 2-1

LONG BEACH - Junior Eileen Maes' overtime header lifted No. 15-ranked Long Beach State past visiting 24th-ranked Baylor, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field.
The win improves LBSU's record to 3-0, it's best start since the 2006 campaign when the 49ers started the season undefeated in its first three games. It was LBSU's 10th consecutive home win as the 49ers have won their last 13 of 14 games at George Allen Field.
The victory also gave 49er head coach Mauricio Ingrassia win No. 99 as he is just one win away from reaching his 100th career win.
With just a minute into the overtime period, Maes received the ball from senior Jordan Nelson, heading the ball passed Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss from six yards out to record her first goal as a 49er in the 91st minute.
In the first half, it was a battle on both ends of the field as both teams went into the half scoreless. The Bears (3-1) would outshoot the 49ers, 4-2, with one corner kick taken by LBSU.
It would take another 13 minutes in the second half before Baylor's Dana Larsen headed the ball into the back of the net in the 58th minute to put the Bears up 1-0.
In the 63rd minute, senior Alex Balcer took a free kick from midfield that sailed over the Baylor goalkeeper's head and bounced right into the net, to tie the game at 1-1. Balcer's second goal of the season, was almost an exact duplicate that came against Arizona in the season opener.
Sophomore Marrina Meyers earned her third consecutive win while in front of the net for the 49ers, recording five saves.
Balcer led the 49ers with three shots, one on goal, followed by Maes with two shots, two on goal. LBSU outshot Baylor, 11-10, for the game, with five on goal.
LBSU returns to action on Thursday, as the 49ers take their first road trip of the season visiting BYU. Kickoff begins at 5 p.m. PST.
