LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team suffered its first season-opening loss since 2005 as it fell to No. 14 BYU, 2-0, Friday evening at George Allen Field.

Senior Karina Camacho led The Beach with three shots, two of which were on target. Senior Lindsay Bullock, sophomore Nadia Link and freshman Tori Baldridge also had a shot on goal, while junior Emily Kingsborough tallied six saves in net.

The 49ers (0-1-0) played the nationally-ranked Cougars tightly as the two teams went into the break in a scoreless tie. In an evenly matched first half, Long Beach State held a slight advantage in shots (4-to-3). Camacho had LBSU's best opportunity at the 16:05 mark when her shot from about 18 yards out curved toward the near post, but was tipped away by BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson.

The Cougars (1-0-0) also had a chance to get on the board when Carlee Payne broke away down the right side, but solid defense from Alex Balcer forced Payne's sliding shot to go wide left.

BYU then put the pressure on after intermission, outshooting the 49ers, 10-3. Kassidy Shumway scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 1:47 into the second half as she headed a cross from Stacy Bartholomew to the upper right corner. Payne then tacked on one more for the Cougars in the 53rd minute to secure the 2-0 victory.

BYU won the battle in shot attempts (13-to-7), while LBSU had four corner kicks to the Cougars' three.

Long Beach State returns to action on Monday, Aug. 23, when it heads to Fresno State for a 7 p.m. showdown.
