LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team battled FIU to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game Friday at George Allen Field.
The 49ers dominated possession, outshooting the Panthers, 17-7, and holding a 7-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes. Long Beach State totaled six shots, including one on frame as junior Taylor Nelson's header attempt was saved.
The 49ers came out attacking in the second half and took a 1-0 lead at the 48:08 mark when Lyons made her way to the top of the box before dropping the ball off to Rangel on her right side. Rangel then drilled a shot over FIU goalkeeper Kelly Struyf and into the upper netting.
LBSU tacked on another goal in the 62nd minute as Lyons was able to use her speed to get to a chip pass from Oseguera before an oncoming Struyf. The quick touch from Lyons redirected the ball into the open net.
The Panthers then made a late push, cutting the deficit in half at the 72:28 mark. Long Beach State suffered from a tough break as a defender slipped while back pedaling, giving Alyssa Robinson a breakaway. FIU would eventually score the equalizer with 1:46 remaining.
The 49ers officially open the 2013 campaign next Friday (Aug. 23) when they welcome Northern Arizona to George Allen Field for a 7 p.m. showdown.
