PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Long Beach State senior Monica Villarreal captured the third annual Palm Springs City Amateur Championship on Sunday at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort.

Villarreal won the two-day, 36-hole tournament carding a 71 in both rounds to close with a 2-under par 142. The Yorba Linda native edged out fellow LBSU teammate freshman Bow-Kay Salotti by two-strokes. Salotti recorded rounds of 76 and 68 to finish at even-144.

This past fall season, Villarreal helped the 49ers win their first tournament of the year at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore. Villarreal recorded her highest finish of the season, tying for second-place at 7-over.

LBSU returns to action on Feb. 19, as they open the spring season at the three-day Folino Invitational at Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry.
