Women's Golf Adds Three In Fall Signing Period
Nov. 19, 2013
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Head Coach Joey Cerulle has announced the signing of three high school athletes to National Letters of Intent beginning in the 2014-15 season.
“I am very pleased with the balance and depth that this class has, and am excited to add three more solid players to the 49er family,” noted Cerulle. “We were able to add a nice mixture of local talent in a class that could come in and make an impact on this team right away.”
The 49ers bring in one of the top players in the country in Jennifer Yu, out of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. As the defending Sunset League Champion and a top 30 player in the 2014 class, Yu has the ability to compete at the highest level with great potential for success. Yu enjoyed a very successful summer that saw her overall ranking rise to 75th in the country and honed her craft to be known as a force in women’s golf. “We were overjoyed when Jennifer committed to Long Beach State,” commented Cerulle. “She will be plugged in right away and can make an immediate impact on our team’s achievements.”
The second newest 49er is Felicia Taverrite out of Murrieta Valley High School. Felicia is a three-time First Team All-Southwestern League finalist and has multiple top 10 finishes in Southern California’s Toyota Tour Cup Series events. Cerulle noted, “Felicia was the ‘diamond’ that we found this summer. Her hard work and dedication to her game fits the mold of our team. I’ve never met someone who is so eager to get better each and every day. She will be a dream to coach and watch her progress.”
The final 2014 recruit will bring great satisfaction to the Long Beach community. Alicia Arzaga from Long Beach Wilson High School will be staying local and heading to The Beach. Alicia, the three-time runner-up and defending Moore League Champion, is arguably the area’s top player. Cerulle stated, “It is always a blessing to have the best local talent staying home and choosing Long Beach. Alicia comes from one of the top high school programs in the country and will be ready for the rigors of college golf right away.”
Long Beach State continues the 2013-14 season starting February 15 at the Stanford Intercollegiate. The 2014 class will begin competing for the 49ers in the fall of 2014.
