NORMAN, Okla. - Long Beach State's Chaewon Park continued with her stellar performance, winning her opening match in match play of the 37th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Park advances to Thursday's round of 32, where she'll face Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Canada with a start time of 7:20 a.m. (PST) from the first tee.
The LBSU junior-to-be Park defeated Julia Calbi of South Barrington, Ill. 3 and 2.
The Torrance native took an early lead going 2-up on the first three holes and would keep her lead as she made the turn onto the back-nine at 1-up. Park would extend her lead making two consecutive birdies on the par-5 13th and par-3 14th to go 3-up. She would bogey the 15th before finishing the hole with a birdie on No. 16 to go 3-up and win the match.
This is the first time that a 49er women's golfer has advanced to the round of 32 since 2008, when Lee Lopez fell in the quarterfinals in Erin, Wis.
