The Long Beach State women's golf team will make the short trek up the San Fernando Valley to take part in the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine. The two-day, 54-hole tournament begins on Monday, Mar. 5, with first and second round action and final round play concluding on Tuesday, Mar. 6. All three rounds will take place at the par-72, 6, 131-yard El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. Live action can be followed on Golfstat.com.
BRUIN WAVE FIELD
LBSU will be among a 15-team field at this year's Bruin Wave Invitational. Seniors Monica Villarreal and Noelle Zavlaeta, junior Simone Hoey, sophomore Rochelle Chan and freshman Chaewon Park will represent the 49ers as they go up against (99) BYU, (122) Cal State Northridge, (67) Long Beach State, (46) New Mexico, (102) New Mexico State, (8) Oklahoma State, (49) Oregon State, (22) Pepperdine, (42) San Diego State, Sonoma State, (44) Stanford, (1) UCLA, (57) UNLV, (74) Washington State and (83) Wisconsin
LAST YEAR'S BRUIN WAVE INVITATIONAL
LBSU posted a 54-hole total of 66-over-par 930 to finish 11th place at last year's 15-team Bruin Wave Invitational at the Robinson Ranch Valley Course in Santa Clarita. Simone Hoey was the top player for the 49ers as she tied for 29th with a 12-over 228, followed by Monica Villarreal tying for 45th (+16), Rochelle Chan tied for 48th (+17) and Noelle Zavaleta tying for 59th (+22). UCLA won the team title with the Bruins' Lee Lopez taking individual medalist.
49ERS IN THE RANKINGS
LBSU opens their second tournament of the spring season at No. 65 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings and 67th in Golfstat. LBSU remains the second highest ranked team in the Big West Conference behind UC Davis as the Aggies are ranked 25th (Golfstat) and 27th (Golfweek).
LBSU OPENS SPRING SEASON AT FOLINO INVITATIONAL
The 49ers opened the spring season at the 12-team Folino Invitational, finishing in third place with a 66-over-par 918 at the Industry Hills Golf Club. Monica Villarreal led the way for LBSU, placing fifth at 11-over 224, recording her second top-10 finish this year and seventh overall in her career. Rochelle Chan tied for eighth (+14) posting her second top-10 this season and fourth overall and Simone Hoey finished in 18th (+19) for her third top-20 this year and fifth overall.
LBSU CLOSES OUT FALL SEASON AT LAS VEGAS SHOWDOWN
The 49ers concluded the 2011 fall season with an eighth-place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev. LBSU completed the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 31-over 895, after shooting rounds of 288, 294 and 313. The 49ers finished four strokes ahead of then-ranked No. 48 East Carolina (ninth) and just four shots behind Louisville, UC Irvine and tournament host UNLV, all tied for fifth.
ZAVALETA TABBED BIG WEST GOLFER OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER
Senior Noelle Zavaleta was named Big West Conference Golfer of the Month for October for her performance at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown (Oct. 24-26) in Boulder City, Nev. This was the first monthly award for the Lakewood, Calif. native this year and second overall. Zavaleta received the last golfer of the month award last season for the month of April after tying for second place at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Half Moon Bay. Zavaleta turned in a career-low 69 in the opening round to finish the tournament in fifth place with a 1-under par 215. This was Zavaleta's first top-10 finish this season and fifth overall.
SAVE THE DATE, GOLD RUSH RETURNS IN 2013
The Gold Rush tournament hosted by Long Beach State will return next year, Feb. 10-12, at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda. Participating teams will be announced later this year.
LBSU INKS TWO TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
Head Coach Joey Cerulle announced the signing of Shawnne Martinez (Modesto) and Kassidy Teare (Vista) to National Letters of Intent. Martinez is a three-time CIF Northern Division champion and appeared twice in the California State Championship. Martinez is a two-time member of the Junior America's Cup Nor Cal Team that won this year's championship. The Modesto native qualified for this year's USGA Jr. Girls and won the JGANC/NCGA Nor-Cal Junior Championship and JGANC Tournament of Champions. Martinez is currently ranked at No. 74 in the world by juniorgolfscoreboard.com. Teare is a two-time qualifier for Junior World's and finished third in 2010 and second in 2011 for Player of the Year by San Diego Jr. Golf Association. The Vista native won this year's Don Stadler Memorial and Future Champions Tour Major in Sandpiper. Teare is currently ranked 10th best player in California by Golfweek.com.
NINERS TAKES FIFTH AT PRICE'S "GIVE `EM FIVE" INTERCOLLEGIATE
LBSU carded a 19-over par to finish in fifth place at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The 49ers recorded a 54-hole total of 883 (287-301-295) at the par-72, 6,258 yard NMSU Golf Course. Senior Monica Villarreal, sophomore Rochelle Chan and freshman Monica Umpant were the top players for LBSU as all three tied for 17th with a 6-over 222. Freshmen Ashley Greer and Bow-Kay Salotti made their collegiate debut in Las Cruces. Playing as individuals, Salotti tied for 45th at 13-over, while Greer tied for 74th at 23-over.
49ERS, CHAN WINS ROSE CITY COLLEGIATE
LBSU held onto a 10-stroke lead over Fresno State to capture the Rose City Collegiate at Langdon Farms Golf Course in Aurora, Ore. This was the first tournament win for the 49ers since winning the inaugural Folino Invitational last year in Irvine. LBSU finished the two-day tournament at 36-over 900 (298-299-303). Sophomore Rochelle Chan recorded her first career tournament win as she captured individual medalist with a 4-over 220. Chan fired a career and tournament low 66 in the opening round as she held onto a three-shot lead over teammate Monica Villarreal (+7).
CHAN NAMED LBSU STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Rochelle Chan was named Long Beach State Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore., where she won individual medalist and helped the 49ers capture their first tournament title this season.
49ERS FINISH 13TH AT PTARMIGAN RAM FALL CLASSIC
LBSU kicked off the 2011-12 season at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic (Sept. 12-13) in Fort Collins, Colo., as the 49ers finished in 13th place. The 49ers recorded rounds of 310, 303 and 306 for a total of 55-over 919. Junior Simone Hoey led the way for LBSU, tying for 23rd at 7-over 223. Freshman Monica Umpant made her collegiate debut, finishing in 83rd at 26-over.
BIG WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS BACK UP TO SAN LUIS OBISPO
The Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship returns to the San Luis Obispo Country Club, Apr. 22-24, after spending the last two years at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita. This year's 54-hole conference championship will return to a three-day format with 18 holes being played each day as seven teams battle for the conference championship and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The 49ers travel down south for The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn hosted by San Diego State. The three-day tournament begins on Sunday, Mar. 18 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort in Rancho Bernardo.
