49ers in first place at Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate
Oct. 10, 2011 LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Coming off from its first tournament win of the season two weeks ago at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore., the Long Beach State women's golf team continued with their solid performance at the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., finishing in first place after Monday's opening round. LBSU shot a 287 at the par-72, 6,258 yard New Mexico State University Golf Course to lead the field of 16 teams by one-stroke over second place Baylor and three shots over Idaho in third. Tournament host New Mexico State is tied for seventh with a 299. Four 49ers finished in the top-20 as senior Noelle Zavaleta led the way for LBSU, firing a two-under par 70 to tie for third. Zavaleta carded four birdies for the round as she's just one-stroke behind Chelsey Cothran of Baylor and Teo Poplawski of Idaho. Senior Monica Villarreal and sophomore Rochelle Chan shot an even-72 to tie for ninth. Villarreal's scorecard was highlighted by 16 pars with one birdie and one bogey, while Chan recorded four birdies. Junior Simone Hoey is one-stroke behind with a 73 as she's tied for 16th, while freshman Monica Umpant is tied for 46th after shooting a 77. Umpant recorded her first career eagle that came at the par-5, 16th hole. Sophomore Ashley Greer and freshman Bow-Kay Salotti made their first collegiate tournament debut on Monday. Playing as individuals for the 49ers, Salotti carded a four-over 76 to tie for 37th, while Greer shot an 82 to tie for 81st.
