SAN DIEGO - Long Beach State recorded a 24-over-par 312 in Tuesday's final round of The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn to finish in ninth place.

LBSU completed the 36-hole tournament at 39-over 615, finishing ahead of six teams that were ranked in the top-50. The 49ers edged No. 27 Texas and No. 17 Washington by two strokes as the Longhorns and Huskies tied for 10th. Thirty-third ranked Denver placed 12th, while No. 16 Arizona tied for 13th, No. 48 New Mexico placed 15th and tournament host and No. 41 San Diego State finished in 16th.

Third-ranked USC captured the team title with a 14-over 590, winning by two strokes over No. 8 Arizona State (+16) and six shots over No. 13 Texas A&M (+20) in third.

Senior Monica Villarreal led the way for LBSU with a final round 77 to tie for 15th at 5-over 149. This is Villarreal's second top-20 finish this season. Villarreal carded only one birdie for the round, while collecting 11 pars and six bogeys.

Junior Simone Hoey improved by six shots from Monday's opening round with a 74 to move up in the standings by 30 spots to tie for 35th with a 10-over 154. Hoey's scorecard was highlighted by her first eagle of the season that came at the par-4, 341-yard 17th hole. Hoey also made one birdie and 12 pars, while recording just three bogeys.

Sophomore Rochelle Chan carded a 79 to tie for 45th at 11-over, while freshman Chaewon Park shot an 82, tying for 57th at 13-over and senior Noelle Zavaleta improved by one stroke for an 82 to tie for 80th at 21-over.


 

 

Freshman Bow-Kay Salotti, playing as an individual, improved by four shots with an 84, tying her for 88th at 28-over.

Sophia Popov of USC captured individual medalist with a 2-under, winning by two strokes over Patricia Garcia of Texas A&M.

LBSU returns to the course next Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 26-27) for the Anteater Invitational at Dove Canyon Country Club hosted by UC Irvine.
