LBSU In First Place At The Gold Rush In Yorba Linda

YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Long Beach State freshman Shawnee Martinez fired a career low 69 in Monday's second round of the 2013 Gold Rush presented by Farmers Insurance at Yorba Linda Country Club.
The Modesto native currently sits in second place with 3-over par 147 and remains just three shots behind first. Martinez started off the spring season with an opening round 78, recording three bogeys and one double-bogey.
In the afternoon round, Martinez came roaring back with a bogey-free front-nine that was highlighted with two birdies to finish at 2-under. On the back side, Martinez collected two more birdies, while recording six pars and just one bogey for the round.
LBSU leads the field of 11 teams by six shots over second-place Gonzaga (+41) and 12 shots over San Diego State (+47) in third. The 49ers completed the opening round with a 307 to finish in first. LBSU improved by three strokes in the second round for a tournament low 304 to finish with a 36-hole score of 35-over 611.
Freshman Janelle Sua, playing as an individual and making her first collegiate tournament appearance, tied for 25th at 17-over as she leads the field of 10 individuals with Deidre Crabtree of Cal State Fullerton by two shots over fellow teammate junior Ashley Greer.
Greer tied for 36th at 19-over after rounds of 82 and 81, while sophomore Bow-Kay Salotti, also playing as an individual, tied for 43rd at 21-over with rounds of 83 and 82.
Emma Henrikson of San Diego State leads of the field of 65 players with an even-144.
Final round play begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Live play can be followed on Golfstat.com.
