Long Beach State falls 3-2 to Pepperdine in Sand Volleyball for first loss
March 21, 2012
Long Beach, Calif. - Down 2-0 after two flights, Long Beach State rallied to win two of the three matches they needed, but a close loss in the third match of the three allowed Pepperdine to hand Long Beach State its very first team loss in sand volleyball. Long Beach State started out in a hole against the Waves after the first two matches. Libby Fontanilla and Alma Serna lost 21-10, 21-10 to Kelley Larsen and Stevi Robinson, while Michaela Christiaansen and Emily Cook gave the Waves a second win 21-16, 21-13. Owing to Long Beach State's 2-1-2 format for home duals, the 49ers needed to win the next match to have a chance, and got it from the veteran pair of Lauren Minkel and Jocelyn Neely. The 49ers pair dropped the first set against Victoria Adelhelm and Kellie Woolever, but rallied for a second set win behind 11 kills from Neely, and then won the third set 15-13 behind a trio of third-set aces from Neely that gave the 49ers some breathing room. Long Beach State also won the top flight on the day, as Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke picked up a big win against Caitlin Racich and Summer Ross. Roenicke made 27 digs of the top pair, leading the team to a 19-21, 21-17, 15-6 win over Racich and Ross. Caitlin Ledoux added four blocks for the 49ers in that win. The match was lost, however, as Chelsea Cabrajac and Haleigh Hampton dropped a close first set to Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill. Tied 21-21 in the final switch, Frederick and Hill finally pulled ahead to take a 25-23 win, and then used that momentum in a 21-16 second set victory, despite four blocks from Hampton.
The Waves improved to 1-0, earning their first dual match win, while Long Beach State moves to 1-1. The 49ers play two more home dual matches next week, hosting Loyola Marymount for a second time at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 26 before taking on USC on Wednesday, March 28.
