Long Beach State Travels to the Garden State for Tournament
The Long Beach State women's basketball team closes out the non-conference portion of the season at the NJIT Christmas Tournament in Newark, N.J. The Beach will kick off the tournament against host, NJIT, on Thursday, December 28 at 2 p.m. (PT). The contest will be televised on ESPN3. The following day, the Beach will play in either the consolation game at 12 p.m. (PT) or the championship game at 2 p.m. (PT) against either VCU or Penn. The tournament concludes Long Beach State's non-conference portion of the season as Big West Conference action begins in January.

Quick Hits
• The Beach are 2-10 on the year with their pair of victories coming on the road at Arizona (80-72) and Grand Canyon (65-63). Long Beach State is 2-3 when playing on the road and 0-1 when playing at a neutral site.
• Long Beach State is averaging 10.6 steals per game which leads the Big West. The Beach have led the league in steals in each of the last four seasons. LBSU's 127 steals on the year also rank 41st in the nation.
• The Beach leads the Big West in turnovers forced with 20.08 per contest which also ranks 47th in the nation. In the last tournament, Long Beach State forced its opponents into 26 turnovers.
• Freshman guard Shanaijah Davison has led the team offensively with 12.6 points per game as she has recorded seven double-figure scoring games and three 20-plus point showings thus far.
• Senior Cecily Wilson and freshman Emma Merriweather each posted a 20-point performance against New Mexico as Merriweather tied her career-high with 23 points, and Wilson tied hers with a 20-point effort.
• Wilson was named to the Beach Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing the week with 24 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.
• Freshman Ma'Qhi Berry had a career-game against No. 7 Tennessee as she led all scorers with a career-high 19 points to go along with career-bests in assists (9) and rebounds (7). She shot 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from the field in the game.

Scouting the Highlanders
NJIT is 1-11 on the year and 1-4 when playing at home. The Highlanders opened the season on a 10-game losing streak before defeating Saint Joseph's Brooklyn, 106-42. Most recently, NJIT dropped a 79-64 contest to Rider.

The Highlanders are led by Tatianna Torres' 12.3 points per game. She also leads the team with 35 assists and 24 steals. She is second on the Highlanders with 5.4 rebounds per game, behind Taj Lewis's 5.8 boards per game. Lewis is also the team leader in blocks with eight.

Series vs. NJIT
Long Beach State and NJIT will meet for the first time in program history on Thursday, December 28.

Scouting the Rams
VCU owns a 2-8 overall record and is 0-5 when playing on the road and 0-1 when playing at a neutral site. The Rams' two wins on the year have come at home against Old Dominion (68-39) and Coppin State (62-47). In their last game, VCU suffered a 71-59 setback to Georgetown.

Tera Reed is the Rams' leading scorer with 14.3 points per game. She is also second on the team with 7.2 rebounds per game, while contributing 22 assists, six steals, and two blocks.

The team's leading rebounder is Bria Gibson who averages 7.6 boards per game, while adding 6.6 points per game, and a team-leading 44 assists and 15 blocks.

Series vs. VCU
Long Beach State and VCU have only met once in program history. In that one game, the Beach won by a score of 69-63 on November 28, 1999 in Long Beach, Calif.

Scouting the Quakers
Penn brings a 4-4 record to the NJIT Tournament. The Quakers are 1-2 when playing on the road and 1-1 when playing at a neutral site. Penn has won its last two contests against Saint Joseph's (57-50) and Rhode Island (84-66).

The Quakers are led by Michelle Nwokedi who averages 12.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 21 blocks and 16 steals. She is second on the team with 16 assists.

Series vs. Penn
The contest between Long Beach State and Penn will be the first meeting in program history.

Coming Up
Long Beach State will begin Big West Conference action as the Beach travels to Santa Barbara, Calif., to play the Gauchos on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. The Beach kick off the conference schedule with four road games before playing their home conference opener on Saturday, Jan. 20 against UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m.
