Dec. 9, 2013
LONG BEACH - Long Beach State's Raven Benton has been named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her performance at the ASU Classic the conference office announced Monday.
It is Benton's first Big West weekly honor as she became the first freshman to claim the award this season.
Benton, a 5-foot-10 guard, earned all-tournament honors last weekend after leading the 49ers to the ASU Classic championship game. Over the two contests, Benton averaged a team-best 18.5 points in 17.0 minutes. She also finished with 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per outing.
Benton opened the tournament with her second 20-point game of the season. In 21 minutes of reserve action against Harvard, Benton helped LBSU storm back from a 23-point deficit in the second half of an eventual 72-67 win. The Federal Way, Wash., native notched a game-high 21 points as she was 11-of-14 from the free throw line, while also connecting on two of her four attempts from behind the arc. Benton added four rebounds and three steals against the Crimson.
In the championship game, Benton played just 13 minutes, but scored 16 points on a 6-for-9 shooting performance. She was also 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Benton's effort was instrumental in Long Beach State taking the Sun Devils, who were receiving votes in last week's national polls, to the wire in a narrow overtime loss.
For the week, Benton was tops on the team in points (37), points per game (18.5), field goal percentage (55.6) and free throws made (15-of-19).
College Sports Madness also named Benton the Madness Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season. She was previously recognized by the website on Nov. 24 following her double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) in the 49ers' 76-66 home-opening win over Loyola Marymount.
Long Beach State returns to action with one game this week as it welcomes San Diego to the Walter Pyramid for a 7 p.m. (PST) contest on Friday, Dec. 13.
