Long Beach State Women's Basketball Inks Two During Early Signing Period
Nov. 14, 2013
LONG BEACH - Long Beach State women's basketball head coach Jody Wynn announced the signing Thursday of guards Jessica Gertz (Oregon City, Ore.) and Cecily Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) to National Letters of Intent. The duo will join the 49ers in 2014-15.
"Both Cecily and Jessica are wonderful additions to our program and to the University," Wynn said. "They are dedicated student-athletes who want to achieve success both on and off the court. CeCe and Jess are winners and we are excited to have them continue their winning ways here at The Beach!"
Jessica Gertz is currently a senior at Oregon City High School. The 5-foot-10 guard helped the Pioneers to a 26-2 record and an appearance in the 2012-13 Class 6A semifinals. She finished her junior campaign averaging 8.4 points per game. This past summer, Gertz was named the MVP of the End of the Trail River City Classic, while she was also selected to the End of the Trail Shootout's all-tournament team, after averaging 22.1 points for Oregon City Black.
"Jess is a pure shooter and a born winner," Wynn said. "Oregon City has a long line of young women who have graduated and gone on to play college basketball. Jess is a leader on and off the court, and has learned how to win at a young age. Her quick shot release will really benefit her at our level, and when you add her winning mentality and relentless work ethic, Jess will be a wonderful asset to our program."
Cecily Wilson is a four-year letterwinner at Mesquite High School in Arizona. As a junior, she averaged 13.5 points and 2.5 assists per game, leading the Wildcats (17-13) to the second round of the 2013 Arizona Girls' State Basketball Playoffs. The 5-foot-8 guard earned first-team all-city and all-district honors and was also named to the 2012-13 Tribune All-Girls' Basketball Team. As a sophomore, Wilson was a second-team all-region selection and garnered all-state honorable mention recognition. She also plays for the Arizona Blue Star Travel Team.
"CeCe fits in very well with our team and is a great worker and student of the game," Wynn said. "She is a tremendous athlete and a tenacious defender who really gets after it. She sees the floor well, makes her teammates better, and also has a very good mid-range game. We are thrilled Cecily is a 49er and we know she will develop into a fantastic player for The Beach."
