LONG BEACH - Long Beach State head women's basketball coach Jody Wynn has announced the 49ers' schedule for the upcoming 2014-15 season. LBSU's 14-game non-conference slate is highlighted by home contests against 2014 NCAA Tournament teams USC, Cal and LSU.
"This preseason schedule will bring a lot of excitement to our Beach fans as we host some great teams from across the country," Wynn said. "It is a balance of very competitive games both on the road and at home in the Pyramid that will challenge our team and help prepare us for Big West Conference play and the postseason. We like to give our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the best programs in the country and this year is no different."
The Beach is set to open the campaign at the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Nov. 14, when they play host to Seattle University at noon. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Seattle head coach Joan Bonvicini, who led the LBSU program from 1979-91. Bonvicini is the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in 49er history and was inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996. The Beach will continue the season-opening weekend with a road game at San Diego State on Nov. 16.
After returning home to entertain defending Pac-12 Tournament champion USC on Nov. 21, Long Beach State will embark on its first true road trip of the year, beginning with the Great Alaska Shootout, Nov. 25-26. LBSU is paired up against Boise State in the first round, and will be joined by Yale and host Alaska Anchorage in the four-team tournament. The Beach then heads to Portland State for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The 49ers also make their way to Pepperdine on Dec. 3, before kicking off a season-long six-game homestand, starting with contests against San Francisco (Dec. 7), and perennial national powerhouses Cal (Dec. 13) and LSU (Dec. 16). LSU advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 last year, while Cal made it to the second round after reaching the Final Four in 2013. LBSU will then host the annual Beach Classic, which features Florida Atlantic, New Mexico State and Pacific.
Following a one-week layoff, Long Beach State will welcome LIU to the Walter Pyramid (Dec. 28), prior to wrapping up its non-conference schedule with a trip to Pac-12 member Colorado on Dec. 30.
The 49ers then open Big West Conference play at home against UC Irvine (Jan. 8) and UC Davis (Jan. 10). The Big West Tournament is slated for March 10-14.
