LONG BEACH - Long Beach State sophomores Devin Hudson (Ontario, Calif.) and Alex Sanchez (Anaheim, Calif.) were named to the 2012-13 All-Big West Women's Basketball Team the conference office announced Monday. Both Hudson and Sanchez earned honorable mention recognition.
Hudson, a 6-foot-3 center, has become a force to be reckoned with in the Big West, where she is averaging a team-best 11.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing. She is coming off a monster performance in the 49ers' regular-season finale where she established a career-high 22 points and 20 rebounds in a win at Cal Poly (March 9). On the season, Hudson has eight double-doubles, six of which came in conference play. She also has 15 double-figure scoring games and 11 double-figure rebounding games.
Sanchez stepped up as LBSU's floor leader in her sophomore campaign at Long Beach State. She has filled in as the team's primary point guard after last year's starter, Hallie Meneses, suffered a season-ending injury in October. Sanchez has compiled a career-high 123 assists and ranks second in the Big West with 4.1 assists per outing. The 5-foot-10 guard led the team in assists in 23-of-30 games and finished with a career-high nine helpers at UC Riverside on Feb. 16. Sanchez is also the 49ers' top scorer at 10.8 points per contest. She has compiled 17 double-figure scoring games, including 10 in Big West play.
The award was the first such honor for Hudson and the second for Sanchez, who also received honorable mention status as a freshman.
The duo has led Long Beach State (16-14) to its best season since 2005-06 when the 49ers went 18-10.
Cal Poly's Molly Schlemer was selected as the Big West Player of the Year, while Brittany Crain of UC Riverside was tabbed the Big West Freshman of the Year. Pacific's Lynne Roberts also claimed the Big West Coach of the Year award.
Long Beach State is the fifth seed in the 2013 Big West Tournament and will begin the postseason with a first-round game against No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, March 12. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Bren Events Center in Irvine.
