Sanchez Earns Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week Honors

IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Sanchez (Anaheim, Calif./Troy HS) was named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Sanchez led Long Beach State to a 2-0 start in Big West play last weekend. The 5-foot-10 guard registered a game-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 62-52 victory over Cal Poly. She positioned the 49ers for the win with six-straight points to start a 10-2 run late in the game. Sanchez also finished the evening 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Sanchez returned two days later with a team-best 12 points in LBSU's 52-45 triumph against UC Santa Barbara. She hit a pair of 3-pointers, including one that broke a 41-41 tie with 3:32 remaining. Sanchez also made a crucial free throw with 53.9 seconds left.
On the week, Sanchez totaled 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 47.1 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe.
This marks Sanchez's first career Big West Player of the Week award, and it is also the first for Long Beach State this season.
LBSU (9-5, 2-0 Big West) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when it heads to Cal State Northridge for its first conference road game. The 49ers and Matadors are set to tip-off at 7 p.m. at The Matadome.
