LONG BEACH - Freshman Anna Kim (Fullerton, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) has been named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday.
Kim, a 5-foot-5 guard, had her best performance of her young career in a convincing 88-68 win over Denver on Sunday, Jan. 5. Against the Pioneers, Kim poured in 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a 4-for-5 effort from behind the arc. Her 22 points, eight field goals and four 3-pointers were all career highs. Kim, who played only 26 minutes, also recorded three steals and two assists.
Kim got LBSU off to a hot start with a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes, giving the 49ers an early 8-0 advantage. She would go on to finish with 17 points in the first period, which was already more than her previous best of 16, to help push Long Beach State out to a 47-36 halftime lead.
This is Kim's first Big West weekly honor and second for LBSU this season as classmate Raven Benton was recognized on Dec. 9. They are the only two freshmen to have won the award this year.
Long Beach State will begin its Big West Conference slate this week when it plays host to UC Irvine on Thursday, Jan. 9. Tip-off has been pushed back one hour to 5 p.m. (PST) at the Walter Pyramid.
