Dec. 21, 2013
LONG BEACH - Despite a game-high 21 points from junior Alex Sanchez, the Long Beach State women's basketball team fell to No. 23 Florida State, 72-57, in the Beach Classic championship game Saturday evening.
Sanchez notched her second 20-plus point game of the season as she was 7-of-13 from the floor, with three of her field goals coming from behind the arc. She also totaled a team-best five assists and four steals.
As a whole, the 49ers struggled from the field, shooting just 26.7 percent as a team. They were also outrebounded, 48-31.
Florida State (11-1) struck first, but Sanchez responded with a 3-pointer to give LBSU a 3-2 advantage at the 19:09 mark. That would be the 49ers' only lead of the game as the Seminoles proceeded to use an 11-2 spurt to pull ahead 13-5.
Long Beach State (7-5) then scored seven unanswered to cut the deficit to one at 13-12 with 11:34 remaining. Sanchez started the rally with five-straight points before Meneses sank a pair of free throws.
FSU would not relinquish its lead, however, as it came storming back with a 20-4 run over the next 11 minutes to go on top, 33-16. Meneses drained a 3-pointer with 21 seconds on the clock to make it 33-19 at the break.
In the second period, the Seminoles went up by 20 (45-25) with 15:55 to play, but Sanchez and Meneses once again teamed up to spark an 11-1 spurt, which closed the gap to 10 at the 14:10 mark. Sanchez started the run with five points and Meneses would eventually finish it with back-to-back 3-pointers.
Florida State then used a 16-6 run of its own to rebuild a 20-point lead at 62-42 with 5:01 to go. Long Beach State was unable to recover as the Seminoles went on to take the 72-57 victory.
FSU registered a 48.2 field goal percentage. They were paced by Natasha Howard, who compiled 16 points and 15 rebounds. Yashira Delgado also had 14 points and eight assists.
Following a busy week where it played three games in five days, Long Beach State will break for the holidays and return to action on Saturday, Dec. 28, when it heads to USC for a 2 p.m. game.
