MISSOULA, Mont. – The Long Beach State women’s basketball team outscored Oral Roberts 51-48 in the final three quarters, but a tough opening 10 minutes hampered the Beach as their rally came up short in a 64-58 loss against Oral Roberts on the first day of the Lady Griz Classic in Missoula, Mont.

The Beach (1-6) spread the points around with freshman Mason VanHouten leading the team with a career-high 10 points in just her second-career start. Behind VanHouten, sophomore Aaryon Green added a career-best nine points, while junior Martina McCowan contributed eight points, and freshman Shanaijah Davison tallied seven.

Senior Cecily Wilson led LBSU in rebounding with six boards, while adding five points to go along with three steals, three blocks and one assist.

Oral Roberts (4-3) had a strong first quarter as the Golden Eagles out-shot the Beach 53.8 percent to 20 percent from the field en route to outscoring LBSU 16-7. Long Beach State struggled to find the net as the Beach were 3-for-15 from the field and 0-for-6 from long distance.

Despite falling behind by as many as 15 (23-8) early in the second quarter, Long Beach State was relentless in its effort and hustle. The Beach turned the tables on the Golden Eagles and held the edge in shooting 53.8 percent to 46.7 percent in the second quarter. With the Beach scoring 16 points in the frame, they went into halftime down 33-23.

In the third quarter, Oral Roberts’ offense picked up speed again, taking a 13-point lead (50-37) over Long Beach State into the final 10 minutes of action.

However, Long Beach State was unfazed. The Beach went on to outscore the Golden Eagles 21-14 in the fourth quarter, while shooting 36.4 percent from the field. Long Beach State chipped away at ORU’s lead and eventually whittled it down to single digits (54-46) after a Davison three with 4:59 left to play. With the game looking like it could go either way, both teams went on a scoring drought as the next points were not scored until 2:04 when Green knocked down both of her free throws to make it a six-point contest (54-48).

Long Beach State managed to cut Oral Roberts’ lead down to four (62-58) after a jumper by Green with 15 seconds remaining, but eventually fell by a score of 64-58.

Montana was led offensively by Maya Mayberry who scored 10 points, while Jordan Gilbert and Sarah Garvie each added nine points. Maria Martianez just missed a double-double with 12 rebounds and eight points.

Long Beach State looks to bounce back from its setback Saturday evening when it returns to Dahlberg Arena to take on Montana at 5 p.m. (PT) in the final game of the Lady Griz Classic.
