Beach Women's Hoops Wins Fifth Straight with 67-54 Win Over CSUN

LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach State women's basketball team is heating up at the perfect time. The Beach closed out the regular season on a five-game winning streak as they defeated CSUN, 67-54, on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

With the victory, Long Beach State improves to 6-10 in league action and 8-22 overall. Meanwhile, the Matadors fall to 8-8 in Big West action and 15-15 on the year. The Beach have secured a spot in the Big West Tournament, but will await their seeding based on the outcome of the Hawaii-Cal Poly game tonight at 9 p.m. (PT).

Long Beach State played another solid contest as it received double-figure showings from three players in an all-around team effort. Senior guard Cecily Wilson led all scorers with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, while freshman Shanaijah Davison added 16 points, a career-high seven assists, and five boards.

Senior Jessica Gertz tallied 12 points on four made threes, while adding five rebounds in the game. Freshman Naomi Hunt contributed seven points and as many rebounds to lead the Beach, while freshman Ma'Qhi Berry dished out seven helpers to go along with five boards and four points.

The Beach started the game off with a two-point lead, but CSUN used a 7-0 run to jump out in front. Long Beach State, however, bounded back and regained its lead which began a back and forth first quarter for the conference foes. The two teams traded points and the Beach went into the second quarter down by one (16-15).

The deficit didn't last long as Hunt started the frame with a trey to put LBSU back up 18-16. The Beach and Matadors again traded leads and CSUN opened up a seven-point advantage (30-23). Long Beach State bounded back and closed the first half on a 13-3 run as the Beach went into the locker room at halftime up 36-33.

The third quarter began close, but Long Beach State utilized a 15-2 run to open up a 10-point lead (51-41) highlighted by a pair of threes from Wilson and Martina McCowan. With a comfortable lead, the Beach never looked back, taking a 53-45 lead into the final quarter.

Long Beach State cemented the game in the fourth quarter as the defense stepped up and limited CSUN to a mere 15.0 percent shooting from the field as the Matadors managed to connect on just 3-of-20 field goals. Meanwhile, the Beach shot 50 percent from the field (6-for-12) and led by as many as 13 (65-52) before winning the game by a final of 67-54.

CSUN was led by Tessa Boagni's 14-point performance. Boagni also led the Matadors with nine rebounds and six assists.

Long Beach State will play in the Big West Conference Tournament on Tuesday, March 6 at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.
